FAQs
Why does this app work?
This app is based on clinical research. In short, a pure tone at 100Hz may improve motion sickness by activating vestibular function via otoconia.
Is this app safe for my health?
Yes. According to the research, the sound pressure levels needed for effectiveness (80-85 dBZ, or 60.9-65.9 dBA) fall within daily exposable sound pressure levels. The maximum sound pressure is also inherently limited by your iPhone's speaker capabilities. However, you should adjust the volume to a level you find comfortable.
What volume level should I set?
Since it's difficult to measure the exact sound pressure at the temporal areas, we recommend adjusting to a level that is perceptible yet comfortable. Given that 100Hz is a very low frequency, and due to ambient noise, you might not clearly "hear" the sound, but may experience a sensation in your head or deep in your ears.
Do I need to wear headphones?
You can use either your iPhone's built-in speaker or headphones. However, headphones or external speakers (including Bluetooth-connected devices) may produce higher sound pressure than your device's built-in speaker, so be mindful of volume levels when using these. Additionally, we cannot guarantee that all headphones or external audio devices can produce sufficient sound pressure at the 100Hz frequency.
How long should I listen?
In the mouse study, exposure to the tone for 5 minutes beforehand provided protection against motion sickness for at least 120 minutes. In the human study, exposure for 1 minute demonstrated effectiveness in assessments conducted after 3 minutes of motion-inducing activity. The published research does not provide information for additional duration parameters. It's possible that the 1-minute/3-minute protocol was selected due to experimental efficiency considerations (with 82 human subjects participating), though other factors may have influenced this decision. With these considerations in mind, we offer 1, 2, 3, and 5-minute options in the app, allowing you to select based on what works best for you. We welcome your feedback regarding the relationship between exposure duration and effectiveness.
Is it effective to use after an activity has already begun?
The research does not address whether the tone is effective when used after motion activities have begun or after motion sickness symptoms have started to develop. You're welcome to try both scenarios, and we value your feedback on these applications.
Will there be an iPad version?
Yes, we are working on it. Stay tuned.
